Stephanie Zlateva is a Bulgarian-American founder and operator. She won 1st place at Startup Weekend San Francisco at 17, founded ChitChat App (Campus ChitChat) in 2016 at 19 and bootstrapped it to 50,000+ downloads, and today founds and hosts the Silicon Valley Vanguard podcast.
I was 17 years old when I hit my first real operational bottleneck. Startup Weekend San Francisco was less than an hour away, and I desperately wanted to be in that room. I was underage, had no car, and my parents refused to pay the $300 ticket or drive me 53 minutes into the city.
My entire net worth came from babysitting a neighbor's kid at $8 an hour — enough to cover half the ticket. So I cold-emailed the organizer, Rishabh Bhandari, pitched the product thesis I wanted to build, and asked for an economic waiver. He did not just clear the financial path; he engineered the operational one. Because the venue served alcohol, he drafted a custom liability waiver for my parents so an underage high schooler could legally walk through the door, then issued a $25 custom ticket.
We built. We optimized. Our team won first place.
That framework of high-intensity execution permanently shifted my mindset. It became the blueprint I used two years later, at 19, to found ChitChat App (Campus ChitChat) — a hyperlocal social platform designed to change how university students interact.
What I learned leading teams older than me
Behind Campus ChitChat's thousands of users was a structured, multi-disciplinary global workforce. I recruited and managed dedicated iOS, Android, and backend developers, a local operations intern, and an external division of eight administrative moderators in the Philippines responsible for data security, user compliance, and live community safety.
We ran Agile sprints on Trello, held asynchronous daily standups on Skype, and cleared international multi-currency payroll through WorldRemit and PayPal. The ultimate lesson: leadership is not about age — it is about building efficient operational frameworks.
Campus ChitChat scaled to 50,000+ downloads, 20,000+ registered users, and 3,000 daily active users at launch. We achieved all of it with zero marketing budget.
That 19-year-old mindset did not stop with ChitChat. Today, I am channeling the same energy into Silicon Valley Vanguard, a media platform and podcast designed to bridge Bulgarian business leaders directly to Silicon Valley capital, resources, and world-class investors.
